The Ship

Vikings and ships - inseparable!

Without their marvelous sailing ships, the Vikings would have played a much smaller role in history. But centuries of getting around on the water created a race of master boatbuilders, and the ships they developed represented a giant step forward in the design and capabilities of coastal and seagoing vessels.

Old skills must be relearned

To build and sail a Viking ship today involves materials, tools, techniques and human requirements that have been "stuck in time" for centuries. The builders and sailors of Snorri, our modern-day Viking knarr, have had to be archaeologists, historians and detectives as well as superb craftspersons and sailors. For a better understanding of how they spanned a millenium to "get it right," please use the links on the left side of this page.
