THE KNARR
Boat builder: Robert Stevens, Hermit Island, Maine. Stevens is a graduate of the Apprentice Shop of Rockport, a boat-building shop that was dedicated to the preservation of hands-on wooden boat building.
Time to build: 7 months
Materials: oak, pine, tamarack, locust, iron rivets and willow trunnels
Weight: 12 tons; 25 tons with ballast
Length: 54 feet
Beam: 16 feet
Depth: 6 feet
Sail: 35 feet high; 1000 square feet total, made from canvas
Power source: wind and as many as 8 oars
Accommodations: no head, no galley; no above, no below

THE GEAR
Emergency equipment: single side-band radio; hand-held GPS (global positioning system); compasses; lifeboat; immersion suits; extensive medical kit designed by Dr. Larry Michaelis, a renowned heart surgeon and Arctic traveler
Clothing: during calm weather they will wear Lands' End clothing and outerwear underneath waterproof coveralls; in extremely rough weather they will wear Mustang Ocean suits
Food: dried fruits, grains, vegetables, meats; fresh fruit and vegetables; edible plants gathered on shore trips; fresh fish
