Rob remembers his best friend

Log Date: January 17, 1998
Author: Rob Stevens
Location: Cape Bluff Harbor
Speed: At anchor
Weather: Rain, strong easterly wind

From Rob:
I'm sure this will be my last journal. A few days ago, when it looked possible that we would be in L'Anse aux Meadows today, I mentioned that it would be funny if we arrived on the day the most literate member of the crew (me) was going to be journal boy. You can imagine the look of terror on Doug and Terry's faces.

Today has been a very hard day - blueberry pancakes and trout for breakfast, Mexican for supper, thanks to John, John and Homer. Blowing and raining hard all day. I think half the crew never poked their noses out from under the tarp. I went for a hike on shore - had to, I'm journal boy and didn't want to say I spent all day in my sleeping bag. This trip is so rough. Hope the weather clears so I can sweep the crumbs out of my sleeping bag.

I left some of Bob's ashes as we entered this harbor two days ago. I was watching a seagull fly along the headlands, and the beauty of it reminded me of Bob's photography. He was my best friend, without whom I would never have finished this boat on time. There are still so many places I would like to go with him that I brought some of his ashes with me.

[Ed. note: Robert Miller, Rob Stevens' friend and fellow boatbuilder, died shortly after Snorri's completion.]
