Snorri's a palomino on her way to the barn Log Date: September 17 Author: John Gardner Lat/Lon: 52.44 N, 55.54 W Location: St. Michael's Bay Course: At anchor Weather: Cloudy, windy From John G.:We anxiously awaited for the wind to die down, and by noon could no longer resist the temptation to get moving. We weighed the anchors and charged the channel, shooting out of the bay like horses at the starting gate. Rounding the first turn, we were hit by the beginning of what turned out to be huge swells. Snorri took them like the champ she is, and taking the next turn, kicked up her heels and wet her nose. The swells seemed to rise to the challenge, and we shipped a few waves over our stern. Both pumps were immediately put in use, giving our lovely craft a lift and a chance to show her true ability in rough weather. The struggle continued for a couple of hours, with Snorri skidding down the waves and clawing her way back up. I think Snorri realizes she is getting close to home, as she behaved like my childhood, ornery, palomino pony, Taffy, when she saw the barn. However, we had to rein her in, as the wear and tear cost outweighed the benefit of miles. We are anchored in the lee of an island in St. Michael's Bay, and are planning to sail south at first light. We are hoping to be near enough tomorrow night, before the wind dies, for an arrival by sail/oar on the morning of the 19th. Goodnight. Top of page |
