Rob the Rambling Man

Log Date: September 7, 1998

From Rob Stevens:
I don't have anything in particular to talk about, so I'll just ramble on - jumping from one subject to another. We sailed through the night - from Moonstone Harbor on North Carey - and are now off of Shoal Tickle east of Davis Inlet.

Where we are anchored there are real trees, quite a treat for us. It's interesting to see what you notice after you've been missing it: your first spider web, driftwood from small branches, grasshoppers, ants, and, of course, trees. Seeing what washes up on shore is also a favorite of mine. Today it was parts from a wood/canvas canoe rigged for sailing, a stick chewed on by a beaver, and something from a boat held together with clench rings. (I realize only those whose favorite pastime is fondling marine hardware will know what a clench ring is. They will also know how rare it is to find one.)

Some of us got a ride into Nain the other day. One thing I enjoy the most about this trip is seeing how people have lived in the past, and also how that's changed in the present. Of course, when Homer and I get to town what do we do but look for ice cream, derelict boats, and head off to the town dump. We had good luck looking at derelict boats - lots of parts to old one-lung engines and hand winches with London Docks cast into the side. If we could have brought Snorri to Nain, we'd have a different load of ballast.

Well, I've rambled on long enough and have gotten lost, just like the day, in the fog.
