Wind from the north!

Log Date: September 1, 1998
Author: Terry Moore

From Terry:

I can't see anything. Well, I mean I can see the boat, and I can see the water for about 100 yards in any direction, but beyond that is just a grey, wet wall of fog. We even passed Soapstone Island a few minutes ago - an event that Rob has been excited about for weeks, assuming that it was going to be made entirely of soapstone - but we never saw hide nor hair of it, though it was only a half-mile away to leeward.

And do you want to know why this is all so great? Because this grey shmoo comes to us courtesy of a north wind, the first one we have seen here in Labrador. Two weeks of no wind or south wind. Imagine, we are going in the direction we need to go, and we aren't rowing. Or beating.

We have gone through the whole superstition cycle, not mentioning where we want to go, or where we want the wind to come from, so that the wind gods can't divine our intentions and be able to thwart them. To realizing that no matter what we do or say, the wind is going to come from the south, so we might as well scream at the sky if that feels better.

Me, I'm just thankful for this wind, right now.
