We are anchored where we intended to yesterday - the wind has been blowing from the south the last couple of days so yesterday we tried doing some long tacks, figuring that the current would help. And we had beautiful weather. By yesterday evening we had made only 12 miles south and were off Cape White Handkerchief.

We encountered strong headwinds when we approached shore, so we stood off, set our sea anchor and drifted during the night. The anchor watch was entertained by northern lights and intense stars, and the rest of us were rocked not-so-gently to sleep by a southern swell.

We were up and at it by 6 this morning, discovering we had gone only a half-mile to the south and 2 miles east. Figuring it was not worth beating ourselves up over a couple of miles, we headed for shore. We were less than a mile from our present anchorage when the wind shifted to a desirable stiff northwest breeze (with rain). We decided to take it - and were disappointed 6 miles later when it disappeared.

It took us until 5 this afternoon to row back to the anchorage (it was the closest). Third time's the charm. It is now a little after 8 and everyone is in their sack. I am anxious to join them. Good night.
