Another delay - and a visit from an old friend. Date: July 31, 1998 Author: Hodding Lat/Lon: 66 deg 50.4 min N, 53 deg 27.5 min W Location: The same as yesterday Speed: Zero Weather: Raining all day Sightings: Elias I was wrong. We did not leave this evening, although I dearly wished we could. Around 4 in the afternoon, we got Snorri all ready to go, spending a good two hours stowing gear and cleaning up. Lastly, we took down the tarp. About a minute later, the wind came blowing out of the south and it started raining. It was too much for us to row against. So, we put the tarp back up to wait out this little spell of bad weather. It kept going. We decided to wait for Herb's latest weather report and eat dinner. I was especially glad. Although my Viking clothes do well in the rain and cold, I don't particularly enjoy wearing wet, heavy clothing for a week at a time. We had a delicious Thai curry with pork cooked by Doug, and then we tried to talk with Herb by single sideband. I think there were a lot of Portuguese fishermen on the same channel, so that didn't work. We then turned on the computer and read his latest report: winds out of the south and then turning southwesterly by Monday? Tuesday? About the opposite of what we need. Luckily, Elias Larsen - our fellow crew member from last year - showed up at this moment in his motor boat. He'd been looking for us for the past two days. We all shook his hand or hugged him hello. Seeing him washed away all the bad news, but made me wish he were sailing with us again this year - as well as Andy, Trevor and Jan (the other crew members who did not return this year). They all added a quality to the trip which I often miss. Elias brought a case of beer, which lifted the crew's spirits and we all played kapaka - even Terry. Terry played his first game of kapaka earlier today - thinking he needed to join in to bring us good luck for the crossing. He lost. I can't remember who lost this evening, but it wasn't Terry. A couple of the guys have gone off to Sisimiut with Elias for the night. The rest of us are staying on Snorri to make sure she's okay. We'll probably switch off tomorrow. So, we wait. I hope everyone reading this has as much patience as we now are trying to possess. It is something that we are continually learning and I find it to be a very hard lesson. Top of page |
