Uncle Robert tutors young Homer in the delicate art of ropemaking

Waiting? Yes, waiting is the name of the game we're playing just now. We had a good five-day stretch of full-on project days. Today, everyone took off on long hikes under the impression that a July 30 departure was more than likely. (Alas, it wasn't to be so - the forecast for the next few days reached us just 20 minutes before I started this journal.)

Maybe tomorrow I will spend the day collecting twigs and brush - no trees here - and attempt a small bonfire. That should take awhile. Meantime, making rope just isn't enough to fill my days. The talk of rowing out into Davis Strait to placate the wind gods has started sounding like a pretty good alternative to staying here.

Although Robert seems to be in a state of bliss. He takes dips in the water nightly. Today, he took up pipe smoking and duck hunting. He says he wants to move here. Many of the other crew members have taken to the bottle - at least for tonight.

Well, I hear a Kapaka game calling my name. With any luck, next time you hear from me, I'll be writing from Canada.
